PolicyLens

Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 24, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Toastfield ("we," "us," or "our") handles information in connection with PolicyLens. The short version: we collect no personal data at all.

Quick summary

We collect zero personal information. No account, no name, no email, no device ID.

Search queries

Sent directly to the Socrata Discovery API and individual government agencies' open-data portals. We do not log or store your searches.

Favorites

Bookmarked datasets are stored locally on your device only. Never transmitted.

1. What We Collect

PolicyLens is designed to collect as little information as possible. Specifically:

  • Personal information: None. We collect no personally identifiable information of any kind. No account is required. No email, name, phone number, or device identifier is collected by Toastfield.
  • Search queries: When you search for datasets, your query is sent to the Socrata Discovery API and, for individual datasets, directly to the relevant government agency's own open-data portal. We do not intercept, log, or store your search terms. See Section 2.
  • Saved favorites: Datasets you bookmark are stored locally on your device. This data is never transmitted. See Section 3.

2. Search Queries and Government Open-Data APIs

When you search for datasets within PolicyLens, your search query is sent directly to the Socrata Discovery API (api.us.socrata.com), a catalog service that indexes open datasets published by federal, state, and local government agencies — including many that also appear in the data.gov catalog. When you open a specific dataset, PolicyLens requests that dataset's data directly from the government agency's own open-data portal (for example, data.ny.gov), which is typically hosted on the Socrata platform. Toastfield does not receive, log, or store your search queries — they go from your device directly to these services.

These services may log requests in accordance with their own privacy policies and applicable federal, state, or local data practices. We encourage you to review the GSA Privacy and Security Notice for details about how the federal government handles API requests, and Socrata's own privacy policy for its role as the hosting platform.

PolicyLens is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the U.S. General Services Administration, data.gov, Socrata, or any government agency.

3. Locally Saved Favorites

Datasets you save as favorites are stored locally on your iOS device using standard iOS storage. This data:

  • Is never transmitted to Toastfield's servers or any third-party server
  • Remains on your device until you unfavorite the datasets or delete the app
  • Contains only dataset identifiers and metadata from data.gov — no personal information

4. Third-Party Services

Socrata Open Data Network

Search queries are sent to the Socrata Discovery API, a catalog operated by Socrata (Tyler Technologies) that indexes open government datasets. Governed by Socrata's privacy policy. PolicyLens is not affiliated with or endorsed by Socrata.

Government agency open-data portals

Dataset-level requests go directly to the publishing government agency's own open-data portal (for example, data.ny.gov), many of which are also indexed by the data.gov catalog. Governed by each agency's own privacy policy and federal, state, or local data practices. PolicyLens is not affiliated with or endorsed by data.gov, the GSA, or any government agency.

We use no analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, crash reporting services, tracking tools, or any other third-party services in PolicyLens beyond these government open-data services.

5. Data Retention

Because PolicyLens collects no personal data and stores only dataset favorites locally:

  • Locally saved favorites are retained until you remove them in the app or delete the app.
  • We hold no server-side copy of any data associated with your use of PolicyLens.

6. Security

Because PolicyLens transmits no personal information to our servers, your data security is governed primarily by the security of your iOS device and the data.gov API itself. We recommend maintaining an up-to-date iOS device with a strong passcode enabled.

Queries sent to the data.gov API are transmitted over HTTPS.

7. Children's Privacy

PolicyLens is appropriate for general audiences including children, as it accesses only public government data and collects no personal information of any kind. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 — in fact, we collect no personal information from anyone.

8. Your Privacy Rights

Because PolicyLens collects no personal information, the traditional data subject rights (access, correction, deletion) do not apply in practice — there is no personal data to access, correct, or delete.

If you have any privacy-related questions about PolicyLens, contact us at info@toastfield.com.

9. California Residents — CCPA Rights

PolicyLens does not collect personal information as defined under the CCPA. We do not sell personal information. No CCPA obligations are triggered because we collect none of the categories of personal information covered by the CCPA.

10. European Residents — GDPR Rights

PolicyLens does not process personal data as defined under the GDPR. We collect no personal information, making GDPR obligations regarding lawful basis, data transfers, and data subject rights inapplicable to this Application.
